A Japanese restaurant in Fujinomiya built around handmade soba, milled in house on a stone mill, and dashi from bonito shaved to order. Eel, tempura and market-fresh seafood round out the menu.
About the restaurant
Wa no Shokusai Tendo (和の食彩 天道) is a Japanese restaurant in the Tonokami area of Fujinomiya. It sits along Route 139, just after you come off the Nishi-Fuji Road, and the calm old-farmhouse-style interior offers both sunken-floor horigotatsu seating and ordinary tables. Soba takes the lead, but the menu ranges widely across tempura, eel, sushi and deep-fried set meals, and the restaurant also caters for memorial gatherings and banquets. The official website describes a large car park with a view of Mount Fuji, and on a clear day the mountain greets you the moment you step out of the car.
House-milled handmade soba and freshly shaved dashi
The owner buys unhulled buckwheat chosen by season and growing region, then mills it on a stone mill inside the restaurant. The dough is said to be made with the water content adjusted to that day temperature, humidity and the state of the flour, and juwari soba made from 100 percent buckwheat as well as seasonal varieties are also prepared. The other pillar is the dashi: bonito is always shaved on the premises so the aroma does not escape, and the thickness of the shavings is changed dish by dish. Alongside chilled zaru and hot kake soba there are original creations such as duck seiro, roast beef soba (2,160 yen) and braised pork belly soba (1,890 yen).
Beyond the soba
Tempura is fried in taihaku sesame oil, using two oils at low and high temperature for different ingredients. The eel is domestic and live, filleted one fish at a time, steamed for about 20 minutes and then grilled with a secret sauce in the Edo style; since it takes 40 to 50 minutes to finish, it is served by reservation only. The owner is said to go to the market every morning for fish and shellfish, so seafood rice bowls and sashimi set meals are on the list too. There is also a reservation-only Irodori set (3,120 yen) pairing soba with sushi and other dishes, an easy choice for a small dinner party.
Prices and opening hours
As a guide for 2026, soba starts at 1,150 yen, tempura set meals at 1,400 yen and unaju grilled eel on rice at 4,910 yen. Reckon on roughly 1,250 to 2,000 yen at lunch and 3,000 to 4,000 yen in the evening. Opening hours are 11:00 to 15:00 (last order 14:30) and 17:30 to 21:00 (last order 20:30), closed on Thursdays and on Wednesday evenings. Getting there from our hotel
Driving is the easiest way from our hotel. From near Fuji IC on the Tomei Expressway, take the toll-free Nishi-Fuji Road, and from its end at Koizumi IC head north on Route 139 towards Yamanashi; turn left at the Tonokami intersection, then right at the end of the road, and the restaurant is about 300 m ahead on the right. Allow around 20 minutes by car. The car park is spacious, though groups arriving by coach are asked to call ahead. It also makes a convenient meal stop on the way to Asagiri Kogen, Shiraito Falls or Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha.
