Mt. Fuji Paragliding Experience

Asagiri Plateau, a flying site at the western foot of Mt. Fuji

Paragliding near Mt. Fuji takes place on the Asagiri Plateau (Asagiri Kogen), which spreads across the northern part of Fujinomiya City. Sitting at 700 to 1,000 metres above sea level, it takes its name from the morning mist that often forms here, and it is also one of Japan's leading dairy farming areas within Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Rising air currents form readily along the mountain ridge to the west, and the landing fields are wide and open, so the area draws everyone from first-timers to seasoned pilots.

A tandem flight lets you fly on your very first visit

The main experience is the tandem flight, where you fly alongside an instructor. The pilot handles all the controls, so no special skill or fitness is needed. The tandem course at Sky Asagiri (499 Fumoto, Fujinomiya City) accepts participants from age 3, and guests weighing 90 kg or more are asked to consult the school in advance. Other schools in the area include Mt. FUJI PARAGLIDING (282-1 Nebara, Fujinomiya City) and Sunny Side Outdoor School (1933-9 Inohanna, Fujinomiya City), each with its own course content and pricing.

Prices and time required

• Tandem experience: roughly 12,000 to 18,000 yen (as of 2026; varies by school, course and weekends or public holidays, and a separate safety management fee may apply)
• Time required: about 40 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from meeting point to dismissal, with several minutes to about 10 minutes actually in the air
• Reception: generally 9:00 to 17:00. All flights are by reservation and may be cancelled due to wind or other weather conditions

How to enjoy it and the best seasons

Whether Mt. Fuji shows itself straight ahead depends entirely on the weather, so late autumn through winter, when the mountain stands out most clearly, and morning slots with crisp clear air are the ones to aim for. Summer here is cooler than the lowlands thanks to the altitude, and some visitors come as much for the cool air as for the flight. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty that cover your arms and legs, plus athletic shoes; a towel and a change of clothes are also handy.

Getting there from our hotel

From the hotel, exit the Tomei Expressway at Fuji IC, take the Nishi-Fuji Road and head north on National Route 139; the Asagiri Plateau is about 40 to 50 minutes by car. The distance makes it easy to set out in time for a morning slot and stop at the Michi-no-Eki Asagiri Kogen roadside station on the way back.
